Four Tips for Getting Better Gas Mileage
Getting dinged at the pump every time you fill the tank can really put a hurt on your pocketbook. Don't look for gas prices to go down much anytime soon, either. Thankfully, there are a number of quick tricks you can do with your car and your driving habits to use less gas. Here’s some good ways to get started.
Keep your tires properly inflated
Making sure that the air pressure in your tires is at the recommended level can be a huge help for keeping your car running smoothly. Some studies indicate that driving with sub-optimum tire pressure can reduce fuel economy by as much as 25%.
Drive at a consistent, moderate speed
Accelerating burns more fuel than maintaining your speed, and of course braking robs your car of all its hard-earned kinetic energy. Keeping a steady speed lets you wring the most juice out of every drop of gasoline.
Don't idle
Don’t idle your car if you’re going to be stopped for more than thirty seconds. It’s a common misconception that it burns more fuel to restart your car than to sit in idle. It does take a small burst of fuel, but idling uses far more.
Seal your gas cap
Make sure your gas cap is tightly sealed. This may seem ridiculous, but since gasoline vaporizes on contact with air, improperly-sealed gas caps are responsible for the loss of 147 million gallons of fuel in the United States every year!
